Skin Care Treatments

What is IPL Photorejuvenation?
IPL Photorejuvenation refers to the use of intense pulsed light (IPL) to improve the appearance of sun damaged and aged skin, as well as reduce spots and redness, resulting in more youthful-looking skin.  IPL Photorejuvenation treatments consistently and predictably improve the texture, tone and color of the skin with little to no down time. IPL also stimulates the growth of collagen, decreases pore size and gives skin a youthful appearance. Any area on the body, such as the chest (decollete), hands, arms, back, and legs can be treated with IPL Photorejuvenation.

What does the treatment entail?
The skin is cleansed, prepared with gel and then treated with the light.  Most individuals find the treatment to be comfortable.  Afterwards, the gel is cleaned off and replaced with sunscreen. Cold compresses may be used post treatment if needed.

What are the benefits of IPL Photorejuvenation?
IPL Photorejuvenation’s short treatment time, quick effects and lack of downtime make it very popular. IPL Photorejuvenation gives skin a healthy, youthful look and decreases the appearance of blemishes such as brown spots and redness from rosacea.

How many treatments are required?
The standard treatment is a series of three to five treatments performed at three to four week intervals. Some may be satisfied with the results from three sessions, and some may desire additional sessions.

Is IPL Photorejuvenation safe?
IPL Photorejuvenation is a safe, common and quick procedure with little risk.

Are there any possible side effects?
You may experience a pink sunburned look for a few hours after treatment and targeted spots will temporarily appear darker and flake off in a couple of days. Existing viral infections such as shingles and herpes may be activated by the treatment and should be pre-treated before you receive IPL Photorejuvenation.

What conditions respond best to this treatment?
Sun Spots, age spots, enlarged pores, freckles and rosacea all respond well to IPL Photorejuvenation.

Will there be any downtime?
No, you may immediately return to your normal routine. However, please let your Radiance clinician know if you have any special events to attend soon so that we can time your treatments such that you will look your best at your event!

What can be expected post-treatment?
Your skin will be sensitive and will need to be protected from the sun. Any swelling will be minimal and can be treated with cold compresses. If pigment (dark spots) are being treated, they will typically darken within 24-48 hours after treatment and then will naturally "flake" off over the the following 2-3 weeks. How soon will results appear? Noticeable results typcially appear within 24-4appear after the first few treatments.

How long does a a IPL Photorejuvenation treatment take?
A typical session takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the part of the body being treated.

Who should avoid a IPL Photorejuvenation?
You may not be a candidate for IPL Photorejuvenation if you have a history of excessive scarring, bleeding or bruising, sun sensitivity, keloid formation or poor healing.  A Radiance clinician will discuss your medical history and candidacy for treatment with you during your initial consulation.

How does the treatment feel?
You will experience some discomfort. Most find the treatment to be similar to the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin.

How long do the results last?
The effects of a Photofacial can last for years or even be permanent if the skin is well cared for following treatment.

What are the alternative treatments?
There are other light treatments and topical creams that may be used instead. A Radiance clinician can discuss some of these alternatives with you if you are interested to learn more. What are the limitations of IPL Photorejuvenation? Those with darker skin are less likely to see results and more likely to experience adverse side effects. It is also important for any skin type that you are not tan at the time of treatment and that you protect your skin from the sun for several days after each treatment.

Instructions for before treatment:
Discontinue use of Accutane® for six months, Retin-A® for two weeks and glycolic acid and
alpha-hydroxy acid products for a week before your treatment. Avoid sun and sunless tanning for four weeks. Do not take aspirin or other blood thinners for at least three days before your treatment. You cannot be treated while you have infections or sores in the area.

Instructions for after treatment:
Protect your skin with moisturizers and sunscreen. Cold compresses and steroid creams may be used as necessary. Avoid irritating your skin, and keep away from the sun (natural or tanning beds) for a couple of weeks.

What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a procedure that uses fine crystals and a controlled vacuum to exfoliate the skin. After the treatment, the skin has improved texture and softness, as well as fewer imperfections such as wrinkles and acne scars.

You can trust the Radiance Medspa professionals for effective, state-of-the-art Microdermabrasion in Belleair Bluffs.

How does the treatment work?
The skin is washed to remove excess oil and dirt. Then, a medical professional targets a stream of aluminum oxide crystals over the area. The crystals abrade away old, dead skin cells, which the vacuum then picks up with gentle suction. This promotes the growth of collagen and new, rejuvenated skin. Moisturizers and sun block are then applied to the treated area.

How many treatments are required?
Microdermabrasion works best when repeated over several weeks. Discuss the optimum schedule and number of treatments with your medical professional.

Is Microdermabrasion safe?
Microdermabrasion is a safe and common procedure. But, as always, provide your full medical history and follow your post-treatment instructions.

Are there any possible side effects?
You may experience some redness and discomfort similar to a sunburn after the treatment. Skin conditions may appear worse for a short time, and your skin may become temporarily darker or lighter.

Will there be any downtime?
One of the advantages of Microdermabrasion is that it has no downtime. You can return to your normal routine and apply cosmetics directly after treatment.

What are the results?
The skin feels softer and appears younger. Minor wrinkles are improved by the growth of new collagen. Exfoliation improves small brown spots, uneven skin tone, acne and acne scars.

How soon will results appear?
A difference is noticeable immediately, and results improve with multiple treatments. Skin improvement varies depending on your individual skin quality.

How long does a Microdermabrasion treatment last?
A Microdermabrasion facial treatment lasts about half an hour. Additional time is required for additional areas.

What conditions respond best to this treatment?
Microdermabrasion works well for damaged skin, whether affected by acne, sun damage or aging.

Who are candidates for Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can be used to rejuvenate skin of any type. Those seeking to reduce minor flaws or wrinkles without downtime are encouraged to consider Microdermabrasion.

Who should avoid Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion should be avoided by those with recent viral infections, such as cold sores and shingles, those with eczema, sunburns or rosacea, those with auto-immune disorders, poor healing or excessive scarring and those with a history of diabetes or keloid formation. You must not have recently had laser surgery or used Accutane.

How does the treatment feel?
Microdermabrasion does not require anesthesia, although it may be mildly uncomfortable. Tightness and heat are common effects and quickly fade.

How long do the results last?
Lasting effects are dependant on proper skin care. Additional treatments will renew your youthful appearance. A series of six treatments over a few months is recommended for best results, followed by regular maintenance treatments.

What are the limitations of Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is designed for minor imperfections and general improvement. Those with very large or dark spots, moderate to deep wrinkles and serious scars should seek an alternative treatment.

Instructions for before treatment:
Avoid Retin-A®, sun tanning or tanning creams for at least a week before treatment. Do not have other facial procedures, such as chemical peels, before treatment.

Instructions for after treatment:
Sun block and moisturizers should be applied after treatment. Anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses may be used as necessary. Avoid irritating the treated skin with harsh chemicals, rubbing or sun tanning for one week. Contact your doctor immediately in the event of any rare effects such as blistering, scabbing or infection.

Glycolic Peels

The Glycolic Acid Peel is a form of chemical peel which slowly resurfaces the skin and clears away acne-causing oil and toxins. Several sessions gradually increase the natural beauty and glow of your skin.

The process takes about 15 or 20 minutes and can be repeated as often as twice a week. The Peels can range from gentle to strong depending on the amount of layers applied and your skin type.

There may be some mild stinging during the treatment, and over the next few days, peeling should occur.

Salicylic Acid Peels

Chemical peeling continues to be the gold standard in cosmetic enhancement of facial skin. Chemical peeling of the face has been performed for many years. The ancient Egyptians used particles of alabaster mixed with milk and honey to abrade facial skin to create tightening. In Egypt Cleopatra is said to have bathed in sour milk, while French women have applied fermented wine to their faces to improve the quality of the skin.

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid and the only member of the beta-hydroxy acid family.

Salicylic acid is beneficial for acne vulgaris, enlarged pores, rough and oily skin, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photoaging.

Who should consider a Salicylic Peel?
Anyone who wants their skin to look better and help fight acne vulgaris, enlarged pores, rough and oily skin, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and photoaging or general poor skin quality will benefit most.

How long will the treatment take?
From start to finish the procedure should take approximately 20 minutes. There is little or no downtime.

When Can I schedule my next peel?
Salicylic Peel is gentle enough to use every two weeks for maximum benefits. Ask your skin care professional when to schedule your next peel.

What should I do after my peel?
You may be more sensitive to the sun, so limit sun exposure during treatment and for at least one week afterwards. Use sun protection for the face of at least SPF 20 or higher.

Avoid strenuous exercise for at least two or three days, as the perspiration may irritate the skin.

When washing your face, do not scrub. Use a gentle cleanser.

Avoid wearing foundation after the treatment or during the days when the skin is actually peeling. Many foundations contain ingredients that are greasy, fragranced, and irritating.

Do not have any other facial treatments for at least one week after your Salicylic Peel. You may resume regular use of Retin-A, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) products, or bleaching creams only after the peeling process is complete.

Who cannot have a Salicylic Peel?
Those with a history of allergy to aspirin, and pregnancy and lactation are contraindications.

Power Peel

If you could remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells, you would see just below the surface lies a fresher, younger looking face. That’s exactly what Power Peel treatments can do for you. By gently and precisely exfoliating the surface of your skin over a course of sessions, Power Peel treatments whisk away years of dull build-up, revealing brighter, more evenly-toned skin in as little as 4 to 6 treatments. This process combines microdermabrasion with a glycolic or salicylic peel, using combination therapy of physical and chemical exfoliation to improve skin texture. Because layers of dead skin cells form a protective covering for bacteria to breed, Power Peels can help in reducing the incidence of break outs. Power Peels are also indicated for the treatment of superficial lines and wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tones, superficial scars, acne and acne scarring.

Over four to six appropriately timed treatments, this repeated process stimulates production of a new layer of skin cells, bringing with it an increased level of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of supple healthy skin. This procedure is safe for all skin types, including Asian and African American skin.

Cosmelan Peel

The Cosmelan® depigmentation peel is a breakthrough treatment that utilizes a 2 pronged approach to eliminate dark patches caused by melanin deposits. First, it deactivates a critical enzyme in the production of melanin responsible for the formation of dark spots. Secondly, it utilizes a proprietary blend of bleaching agents and botanical ingredients to eliminate existing excess pigment deposits.

The Cosmelan® peel is compatible with all skin types and colors and can be used year round because of its very high safety margin. This peel has also proven to be highly effective in treating acne ravaged skin. The Cosmelan® peel does not contain hydroquinone, TCA or AHA.

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color—from pale to tan to dark black—and supplies the skin’s internal UV protection. Under normal circumstances, melanin is evenly distributed and invisible. But when skin undergoes repeated external stresses, especially UV rays, or is exposed to internal disruptions (such as hormonal shifts like those experienced during pregnancy) it produces more melanin than it needs. The result is uneven skin tone, blotchiness, dark patches and discolorations. Over time, this melanin accumulation becomes more visible as cell turnover slows down and skin loses its ability to shed dull layers at a youthful rate.

The Cosmelan® depigmentation treatment is executed in 2 phases: the first phase consists of the application of Cosmelan I, a mask which you wear home and keep on from 4 to 8 hours, depending on your skin type as determined by the aesthetician. At the indicated time, the mask is washed off with water and a pH neutral cleanser. The second treatment phase consists of daily application of a maintenance cream called Cosmelan 2, containing botanical acids that support the depigmentation achieved. Initially after the procedure, you may experience different sensations, varying from warm flushing to slight itching. The exfoliation process may be less noticeable until the 2nd through 5th day following the procedure, when you may notice mild peeling, itching or skin tightness. To maintain satisfactory results, a sunblock of 40 SPF or greater must be worn at all times following treatment.
