When you hear about sulfate free shampoos most stylists think of one of the first companies to really promote this - Pureology, and many stylists & salon owners are demanding sulfate free shampoos, but...

There is a little known fact that when you DON'T have sulfates in your shampoo, then your shampoo is really leaving your hair dirtier, as it's the sulfates that gently, yes gently cleanse the hair without stripping out the color, like Pureology claims. But you all believed it right?

Here are the facts, right from the chemist himself:

Sulfates are mineral salts containing sulfer. Your hair in fact has sulpher in it. Ever burn your hair and smell rotten eggs?

Sulfates are gentle cleaning agents, they are the ones that attach to the sebum and dirt in your hair & scalp and then rinse it away.

When you have sulfate free shampoos, you are using the power of lesser detergents to do a job only sulfates can do well. The rest is relying on the pressure from the water and the pH of the water pH-7 to do the rest of the job, but it doesn't really do a  very good job. Therefore, the hair will get dirtier faster because it was in fact still dirty to begin with, from you shampooing the last time! This dirt will build up each time the client washes their hair, since it won't really be clean and if they also use a lot of styling products, it's a cause for product build up.

If your client is a styling aids freak and piles on the gel and hairspray then sulfates free shampoos can not help you as much as sulfate shampoos can. If you have this type of build up in the hair, then it can be hard to color, highlight or perm.

So don't beleive the hype and learn the truth - it's just a marketing tool like any other.
