Dineen Carter- World of Color Print
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
Courtesy Of Modern Salon and Dineen Carter Atlanta
Before: Model Brittany's beauty is All-American. With Africans, Europeans, Asians and Native Americans in her family tree, she presents Atlanta colorist Dineen Carter with an opportunity to do a stereotype-busting hair color consultation. First, Brittanys Level-3 naturally curly hair is both chemically relaxed and lifted. The combination, says Carter, points her toward a demipermanent formula. Next, Brittany's eye and complexion tones display considerable warmth, clashing with her cool-toned colored hair and ashy regrowth.

Step 1: Section the hair to isolate the fringe and top with zigzag partings.
Step 2: Use zigzag lines to create crown, occipital, side and back sections, letting the nape hang free.

Step 3: Mix the first color, a dark golden mahogany brown demi, and apply to the nape section, working from roots to ends.
Step 4: At the occipital, apply a demi copper mahogany brown, roots to ends.
Step 5: The sides receive a lighter shade, medium copper blonde, roots to ends.

Step 6: Give the crown an extra shot of color, with a medium mahogany gold brown sparked with red.

Step 7: For lightness at the face, use a medium gold mahogany blonde.

Step 8: The top receives a medium red copper brown. All colors process for 20 minutes at room temperature, followed by a rinse and shampoo.
Step 9: Set the hair in small, vertically placed electric rollers, then finish individual sections with a marcel iron.

After: The solution is a design in tones of mahogany that marry cools and warms.

Veils- Curtains - Drapes by M. Aponte Print
Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Copper brown

Before: Misael Aponte designs color with individuals in mind. My goal is to feature my client, he says. She is a living, walking piece of art. After consulting with model Jessica, Aponte decided to bring out the violet in her hair and embrace the alabaster of her skin. He selected three unusual shadescopper, buttercup and blackand applied them in one of his favorite patterns. He called veils, curtains and drapes. The veil is created with 1/8-inch weaves and is designed for a more transparent coloration, while the curtain is thicker via back-to-back foil placement. The drape, designed to block out the sun, is created with back-to-back foils.

Step 1: Working off a top center parting, weave out pieces of a horizontal section and brush a sunlit copper shade from roots to ends.
Process, Fall 2006

Step 3: Again working in the same section, place a third weave back to back and brush on a demipermanent black. Moving down the head, skip an 1/8-in horizontal section, then repeat the three-shade weave sequence.
Process, Fall 2006

Step 4: With all six foils in place, carve out a deep section to be set aside. This will separate the veil from the curtain.
Step 5: Select an accent shadehere the sunlit copperand apply it to three back-to-back slices, roots to ends.

Step 6: Repeat two sets of woven foil veils and a set of sliced curtains shade sequences on the opposite side. Place one set of veils and a set of curtains in the fringe and in theback crown>

Step 7: Place a retangle section section in the center back by taking six back-to-back slices and applying the demipermanent black from roots to ends.

Step 8: Apply a permanent copper-violent shade between between all foils, from roots to ends. Process 40 minutes, rinse, then follow with a color sealer.
After: quite dramatic says Aponte.

Before: For the sophisticated, confident client, says Redken hair color consultant David Stanko, "having great color is a necessity. Here is Michelle, "an attractive woman who cares about her appearance, appreciates the finer things in beauty and fashion and is willing to spend money. Michelle is a natural Level-4 with 20-percent gray. The vision is to take a natural medium brown and make it brighter and warmer while treating the gray. I'm going for a nice Italian roast coffee."
MODERN SALON October 2006

Step 7: Apply highlight sections above the curve of the head. (Here, Stanko places sections to fill in area between previous highlights.) Finally, tie in the color design in the back and sides by placing bleach baliage highlights randomly along the surface.

Step 8: Process until bleach sections achieve light brown. Shampoo, condition and style.

After: Says Stanko, "I work with the way the hair falls, avoiding precise weaves and pieces, for a more elegant uptown finish.

Step 1: To address gray and brighten the base, Stanko mixes equal parts of neutral Level-4 and Level-6 tint with 20-volume developer.

Step 2: Begin by brushing the base color onto the regrowth, working throughout the head in 1/4-in partings.

3: Blend along the hairline with a brush to assure full overage on resistant areas. Process for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Then select pieces randomly and draw the color through to the ends. This will create very soft natural dimension. Process an additional 10 minutes, then shampoo, condition and dry.

Step 5: Starting at the side, at the parietal, take thick weaves from a horizontal parting. Apply a non-ammonia Clear shade mixed with 20-volume developer from roots to ends. This will create brightness with minimal lift.

Step 6: Working upward, alternate Clear sections with woven sections treated with bleach lightener mixed with 20-volume developer. Feather the lightener at the roots.
